Operation Torch, Allied landings in North Africa began on 8th November 1942. Able Seaman Fitzpatrick of Whiteabbey, Co. Antrim was among the first casualties.

On 25th June 1940, Sergeant Francis George Kinghan of Toomebridge, Co. Antrim died while on an attack with R.A.F. 254 Squadron off the Norwegian coast.

Henry "Harry" Kane was a well-known footballer in Portadown, Co. Armagh. He died on 21st June 1940 when H.M.S. Cape Howe sailing as Prunella came under attack.

On 4th June 1940, S.S. River Humber collided with H.M.S. Folkestone in the Irish Sea causing the deaths of three seamen with connections to Northern Ireland.
