Sergeant David Miskimmin served in the United States Army during the Second World War. He hailed from Waterloo, Iowa, U.S.A.
Sergeant Miskimmin arrived in Northern Ireland on 26th January 1942 as part of the first contingent of American troops. He served alongside his 27-year-old son Frank Miskimmin. On arriving in Ulster, David quipped:
I just came over to keep an eye on the boy.
When asked by a reporter from the Northern Whig about his Irish heritage, Miskimmin stated:
Yes, my people came from this part of the world, but I don’t rightly know where. It’s a long way back in my family. Still, over in Waterloo, Iowa, where I used to work as a chef, they called me ‘Irish’. The people are proud of their Irish blood over there.
Before departing the gathered press, Sergeant Miskimmin added:
You can say we have arrived and that the situation is in hand.
David had also served in The Great War of 1914-1918, seeing action in Germany.
