Lance Bombardier Samuel John Boyce of Portadown, Co. Armagh was a prisoner of war on board Japanese ship Lisbon Maru when it came under attack in October 1942.

Lance Bombardier Samuel John Boyce (1063039) served in 965th Defence Battery, Royal Artillery during the Second World War. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Boyce of Bridge Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

Lance Bombardier Boyce died between 1st October 1942 and 2nd October 1942 aged 40 years old. Boyce was a prisoner of war on Japanese ship Lisbon Maru when it came under attack from U.S.S. Grouper off the coast of Shanghai, China. The vessel sank resulting in the deaths of 828 people.

News has reached Portadown of the death by enemy action in Far Eastern waters in October 1942 of L/Bdr Samuel John Boyce, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Boyce, Bridge Street., Portadown. It is known that he was captured at Hong Kong and was on a Jap prison ship.

L/Bdr. Boyce, who had 27 years’ service, has two sisters residing in Portadown – Mrs. David McMullen, 95 Bridge St. and Mrs. Chales Hegan, 40 Union St.

Lance Bombardier Boyce has no known grave and his name is on Column 3 of the Sai Wan Memorial, China. His name is also on the Portadown War Memorial, Portadown, Co. Armagh.
