Next to the Newtownards Cenotaph is a memorial to soldiers of 70th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers killed in the Luftwaffe raid on the nearby airfield.
On 5th March 2012, the local council unveiled a memorial remembering the 13 members of 70th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers killed during the air raid on Newtownards Airfield. It bears the crest of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Newtownards coat of arms.
In memory of the 13 soldiers of the 70th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers killed during the air raid on Newtownards on the night of 15th April 1941.
And in remembrance of all those service personnel and civilians who lost their lives in the Ards as a result of the Second World War.
