On 19th June 1942, the Sunnylands Camp in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim went down in history as the site of the formation of the U.S. Army's 1st Ranger Battalion.
On 2nd February 1942, War Office photographer Lieutenant J.R. Bainbridge visited Sunnylands Camp at Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. There, members of 1/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment were handing over to 63rd Signal Battalion of the U.S. Army.
