The Oval, Parkgate Drive, Belfast

On 4th-5th May 1941, Luftwaffe bombs devastated The Oval, home of Glentoran Football Club in East Belfast. Today, a Type 24 pillbox overlooks the famous pitch.

Action from Glentoran F.C. vs. Cliftonville F.C. in the 1936-37 season, the year that Thomas Pearson made his debut. He would later serve in North Africa with 1st Battalion, Irish Guards.

The "Glentoran" Pillbox

A Type 24 Pillbox remains on the steep banking at the Sydenham End of the Oval in East Belfast. It affords views over the former shipyards, aircraft manufacturing factories, and airfield that were crucial to the war effort.
