Wasserman arrived in Northern Ireland on 26th January 1942 aged 23 years old as part of the first contingent of American troops. Before the outbreak of war, Jerome worked in the insurance business. When interviewed by a reporter from the Northern Whig newspaper, he stated:
I had only just got going but I thought it my duty to volunteer, and here I am, and here I will stay until it is all over.
