Bob Melchior served in the United States Army during the Second World War. He hailed from Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. His Irish grandmother was born in Co. Meath, Ireland.

Melchior arrived in Northern Ireland on 26th January 1942 as part of the first contingent of American troops. When interviewed by a reporter from the Northern Whig newspaper, he stated:

This is a war that must be won if we are to have any freedom at all.

Just then, a Sergeant ordered Bob and his comrades to form up and continue a quick march.
