Fireman John Devitt of Belfast died on 3rd May 1941 when the Belfast-built steam coaster S.S. Corbet struck a mine and sank in the mouth of the River Mersey.

Fireman John Devitt served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of James Devitt and Margaret Devitt (née Hutton), and the husband of Isabella Devitt of Belfast.
Fireman Devitt died on 3rd May 1941 aged 62 years old while serving on S.S. Corbet. The 468-ton British Steam Coaster struck a mine in the mouth of the Mersey off Herculaneum Dock en route from Garston to Belfast with a cargo of coal. Devitt has no known grave and his name is on Panel 31 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
