James Mawhinney

Mate James Mawhinney of Islandmagee, Co. Antrim died on 3rd May 1941 when Belfast-built S.S. Corbet struck a mine and sank in the mouth of the River Mersey.

Mate James Mawhinney served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of William Mawhinney and Abby Mawhinney of Islandmagee, Co. Antrim, and the husband of Esther Jemima Mawhinney of Belfast.

Mate Mawhinney died on 3rd May 1941 aged 36 years old while serving on S.S. Corbet. The 468-ton British Steam Coaster struck a mine in the mouth of the Mersey off Herculaneum Dock en route from Garston to Belfast with a cargo of coal. Mawhinney has no known grave and his name is on Panel 31 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
