William Robert Acheson departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939. His address given on boarding documents was Florencecourt, Enniskillen Co. Fermanagh and he appeared on a list of American and Canadian residents sailing in Third Class.

William, a 39 year old grocer, survived the sinking, landing at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. On 5th September 1939, a telegram informed family and friends of his safety at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
