Mary Carroll departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939. Her address given on boarding documents was c/o Fitzpatrick, Rathfriland, Co. Down and she appeared on a list of American and Canadian residents sailing in Third Class.
Mary, a 60 year old tailor, survived the sinking, landed at Greenock and was later taken to Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Amongst the missing are Miss Mary Carroll, of Ottawa, who was on a visit to her aunt at Lessize, near Rathfriland.
