Mabel Carroll departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939. Her address given on boarding documents was Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone and she appeared under a list of American citizens sailing in Cabin Class.

Mabel, a 43 year old housewife, survived the sinking and landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada having been picked up by the U.S. steamship City Of Flint.

A cablegram received by relatives at Fivemiletown yesterday announces the safe arrival at her home in New Jersey of Mrs. Getrude [sic] Carroll, a native of Fivemiletown, who spent a two months’ holiday in Ireland and set out to return on the Athenia. Mrs. Carroll was one of those rescued by the City of Flint. When at Fivemiletown she stayed with her aunt, Miss McCullagh, stationer.
