John and Eleanor married in Hackney, London, England on 27th April 1918. The couple later resided at Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. John, a 55 year old manager, survived the sinking and landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada having been picked up by the U.S. steamship City Of Flint.
