John Armstrong Chanler and Eleanor Suzanne Barbara Chanler boarded the ill-fated S.S. Athenia at Belfast on 1st September 1939 and later survived the sinking.

John Armstrong Chanler

John Armstrong Chanler departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939 with his wife Eleanor Suzanne Barbara Chanler (née Bamman). His address given on boarding documents was c/o T. Eaton Co., Belfast and he appeared under a list of American and Canadian residents sailing in Tourist Cabin Class.

John and Eleanor married in Hackney, London, England on 27th April 1918. The couple later resided at Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. John, a 55 year old manager, survived the sinking and landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada having been picked up by the U.S. steamship City Of Flint.
