Athenia on 1st September 1939 with her husband Franklin Milnes "Frank" Aykroyd and daughters Prudence Aykroyd and Judith Aykroyd. Her address given on boarding documents was Newtown House, Rathgar, Dublin, Ireland and she appeared under a list of American and Canadian residents sailing in Tourist Cabin Class.
The Aykroyd family resided at 473 Landsdowne Avenue, Westmount, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Joan survived the sinking, landing at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. On 5th September 1939, she was reported safe with fellow survivors at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
