Elizabeth Campbell departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939 with her mother also named Elizabeth Campbell. Her address given on boarding documents was Monaclough, Armoy, Co. Antrim and she appeared on a list of American citizens sailing in Third Class.
Elizabeth, a 9 year old scholar, survived the sinking and landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada having been picked up by the U.S. steamship City Of Flint.
