Eleanor Suzanne Barbara Chanler and John Armstrong Chanler boarded the ill-fated S.S. Athenia at Belfast on 1st September 1939 and later survived the sinking.

Eleanor Suzanne Barbara Chanler (née Bamman) departed from Belfast on the ill-fated S.S. Athenia on 1st September 1939 with her husband John Armstrong Chanler. Her address given on boarding documents was c/o T. Eaton Co., Belfast and she appeared under a list of American and Canadian residents sailing in Tourist Cabin Class.

Eleanor and John married in Hackney, London, England on 27th April 1918. The couple later resided at Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Eleanor, a 50 year old housewife, survived the sinking and landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada having been picked up by the U.S. steamship City Of Flint.
