During the Second World War, many of Northern Ireland's civilians died as a result of events such as the Belfast Blitz or tragic accidents at home and abroad.

Over the course of a series of air raids that became known as the Belfast Blitz, many hundreds of people died both in Belfast and across Northern Ireland.
After setting sail from Glasgow on 1st September 1939, S.S. Athenia anchored off Blackhead, Co. Antrim as tenders ferried passengers out from Belfast Docks.
Probationer Nurse Philomena Mary McCrosson of Meeting House Street, Strabane, Co. Tyrone died on 2nd June 1941 while working at Salford Royal Hospital, England.
Schoolboys Daniel Donnelly and John Creggan died as a result of a tragic accident involving an anti-tank grenade in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone on 14th February 1943.
