Private Ernest Smyth (6983727) served in 6th Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers during the Second World War. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smyth of 57 Montague Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

Ernest joined up in August 1940, serving first with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, then the Royal Irish Fusiliers before finally joining the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.

Private Smith died on 9th August 1944 aged 22 years old as a result of wounds sustained in battle. His grave is in Section XX, Row F, Grave 15 of Bayeux War Cemetery, France. His name is on the Portadown War Memorial, Portadown, Co. Armagh.
