In 1940, during the Second World War, with the threat of Operation SEA LION in the air, 9th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment were sent to Northern Ireland.

On 22nd April 1941, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester inspected elements of 9th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment at Victoria Park in East Belfast.
On the night of 4th-5th May 1941, high explosive bombs and incendiaries rained down on East Belfast. There were seven fatalities among the ranks of 9th Gloucestershire Regiment based at Victoria Park.
