Throughout the Second World War, Lieutenant J.R. Bainbridge was a regular visitor to Larne, recording progress on the building of the new jetty and harbour.

Burns Night is still celebrated in parts of Northern Ireland annually on 25th January. In wartime, traditions would continue with or without haggis.
17th November 1939
On 17th November 1939, a newspaper photographer watched naval ratings turn over the engine of their planes at Aldergrove. In 1940, R.A.F. training was underway.
3rd September 1939
In Northern Ireland, the weather turns colder and the days grow shorter in September. But that did not stop the ongoing training and toughening up of troops.
