Co. Fermanagh was an important strategic base in Northern Ireland during the Second World War, particularly for the R.A.F. during the Battle of the Atlantic.
On 18th May 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Enniskillen inspecting soldiers of 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th (Pathfinder) Infantry Division, U.S. Army.
The village of Newtownbutler lies in the south of Co. Fermanagh close to the border with Ireland. It is home to the sprawling estate and demesne of Crom Castle.
