Greencastle Airfield on the outskirts of Kilkeel, Co. Down saw use during the Second World War by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force.
At 1230hrs on 17th May 1944, a B-17 took off from Burtonwood, Lancashire, England. On board was Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, bound for a meeting with General Stafford LeRoy Irwin at Greencastle Airfield.
