A commemorative plaque at Carrick Hill Community Centre remembers those from Unity Street and the surrounding area who died during the Belfast Blitz of 1941.
Extensive redevelopment in Belfast in the 1980s saw the demolition of Unity Street, which ran from No. 68 Upper Library Street to Hanover Street. For a time, Unity Flats dominated the area but these too have since been demolished. New housing now occupied the Carrick Hill area of North Belfast.
At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Unity Street was a working-class neighbourhood. Two churches stood on the street among the red-bricked terraced housing. The Belfast Street directory lists the following residents in 1939.
Information taken from the 1939 Belfast Street Directory.
