Sergeant Frank Massie Seitz Jr. (17122171) served in 343rd Squadron, 325th Service Group, United States Army Air Force during World War Two. Born on 23rd April 1914, he was the son of Frank Massie Seitz Sr. and Mabel Clara Seitz (née Buell) of Carroll County, Arkansas, U.S.A. On 12th September 1941, Frank married Nellie May Marion in Baxter County, Arkansas, U.S.A. At his time of death, the couple had a three-year-old daughter.
In civilian life, Frank worked as a welder. He was said to be quiet, unassuming, interested in his work and keen to get each job done right. He had a bright outlook on life and was popular with those he served alongside in the United States Army Air Force. Frank enlisted in October 1942 and just over a year later in December 1943, he was bound for Europe. Two of his brothers also had World War Two military service in the Pacific Theater.
Sergeant Seitz died on 26th May 1945. At Langford Lodge, Co. Antrim, he was working on breaking down a wing of a salvaged aircraft. While operating his cutting torch, there was a huge explosion possibly caused by sparks igniting fuel fumes. Seitz was rushed to the base hospital operated by 1st Platoon, 55th Field Hospital but died as a result of his injuries. His death came as a shock to all who knew him. Friends and acquaintances contributed money to buy flowers for the funeral. They also raised money to financially help Seitz’s widow and young daughter.
Two short funeral services were held, both conducted by Chaplain McBride. The first took place in the projection hall of the Langford Lodge base theatre, the only building large enough to house all those who wished to pay their respects. A second service took place by the graveside. Burial first took place at Lisnabreeny American Military Cemetery, Belfast. After the war, Seitz was repatriated to Plot D, Row 7, Grave 100 of Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridgeshire, England.
