Joseph Mann

Master Joseph Mann of Islandmagee, Co. Antrim commanded Merchant vessel M.V. Inverilen when the tanker came under attack on the morning of 3rd February 1943.

Master Joseph Mann served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Born on 6th April 1897, he was the husband of Elizabeth Mann of Islandmagee, Co. Antrim.

Master Mann died on 3rd February 1943 aged 45 years old while serving on M.V. Inverilen. The tanker was part of Convoy HX-224 south of Iceland when U-456 attacked with torpedoes at 0257hrs. The Master, 24 crew members, and 6 naval gunners died as a result. A total of 14 crew members and 2 passengers survived, picked up by H.M.S. Asphodel and landing at Derry~Londonderry.

Master Mann has no known grave and his name is on Panel 58 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England. His name is also on the war memorial of Kilcoan (First) Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim.
