John Archibald Brownlie

Third Engineer Officer John Archibald Brownlie of Gilnahirk died on 7th March 1941 as M.V. Empire Light came under attack from a U-Boat in the north Atlantic.

Third Engineer Officer John Archibald Brownlie served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of John Brownlie and Mary Brownlie of Gilnahirk, Co. Down.

Brownlie died on 7th March 1943 aged 26 years old while serving on M.V. Empire Light. The British merchant vessel was a straggler from Convoy ON-168 in bad weather southwest of Cape Farewell. At 1820hrs, U-638 attacked although the crew thought they had missed the target. M.V. Empire Light was damaged and abandoned with the loss of 39 crew members and 6 gunners.

Third Engineer Officer Brownlie has no known grave and his name is on Panel 43 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
