Able Seaman George Clinton of Belfast died on 7th February 1943 when M.V. Afrika came under attack from U-402 as the merchant vessel crossed the north Atlantic.

Able Seaman George Clinton served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of Hugh Clinton and Catherine Clinton, and the husband of Jane Clinton of Belfast.
Able Seaman Clinton died on 7th February 1943 aged 40 years old while serving on M.V. Afrika. The merchant vessel was en route from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to Liverpool, England. It carried 5,000 tons of steel and 6,457 tons of other cargo including grain and explosives. U-402 launched a torpedo attack, sinking the vessel and causing the deaths of the Master and 23 crew members.
Able Seaman Clinton has no known grave and his name is on Panel 3 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
