Joseph Martinez was an evacuee from Gibraltar housed at Camp no. 2, Cargagh near Downpatrick, Co. Down. Known as Pepe, he first sailed from Gibraltar to the United Kingdom on S.S. Dromore Castle in July 1940.

Also on the steamship were his parents John Martinez Sr. and Clemencia “Menchi” Martinez, his brother John “Johnny” Martinez Jr., and sister Amanda Martinez. The youngest brother Clive Martinez was born at a Dr. Barnardo’s home in Romford, Essex, England before the family moved on to Northern Ireland.

During Pepe’s time in Co. Down, he had a girlfriend named Muriel Cartwright. She taught nursery-school-aged children at the camp.
