Matilda Lillian Grattan

Matilda Lillian Grattan lived in Bangor, Co. Down with her family when she died as a result of enemy action on 16th April 1941 during the Belfast Blitz.

Matilda Lillian Grattan died on 16th April 1941 aged 54 years old. Her home at 40 Ashley Gardens, Bangor, Co. Down took a direct hit from a wayward bomb as the Luftwaffe attacked nearby Belfast.

She was the wife of Andrew Francis Grattan. The couple had daughters Kathleen Grattan, Hilda Grattan, Shelagh Grattan, and Angeline Grattan. They also had sons, Robert Andrew Grattan and George Francis Grattan.

Matilda Lillian Grattan’s grave is in an unmarked plot of Bangor New Cemetery, Bangor, Co. Down. The funeral took place at St. Comgall’s Catholic Church, Brunswick Road, Bangor on 18th May 1941.

A report of the ceremony featured in The Northern Whig newspaper. Reverend T MacGowan and Reverend AR MacNabb conducted the service. Jacob O’Neill, an undertaker from Dufferin Avenue, Bangor, carried out funeral arrangements. Mayor of Bangor, Councillor WM McMillan, and Town Clerk Mr. RM Moore attended on behalf of the council and town residents.
