Growing up in Belfast, Co. Antrim, Joseph had two younger brothers; Patrick born in 1914 and Edward born in 1916. In 1932, Joseph enlisted in the British Army and had 7 years’ service when the Second World War broke out in 1939.

Joseph Russell served with The Green Howards in India, the Middle East, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He died on 18th October 1982. His grave is in Bedford, England.
