Born in Belfast, Co. Antrim, he was the son of James Johnston and Ellen Johnston. His wife was Mary Johnston, also from Belfast. At the time of Private Johnston’s death, the couple had a young daughter named Sadie.

Johnston died on Christmas Day, 25th December 1942 aged 36 years old, while in Germany.
