Private John George Benson (13014845) served in The Pioneer Corps during the Second World War. Born on 22nd March 1885, he was the son of the late John Benson and the late Jane Benson (formerly Trueman, née Willis) of Cannagola Mor, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

In civilian life, John remained a single man and worked as a clerk. Private Benson died as a result of a stroke at 0130hrs on 13th March 1944 aged 60 years old. He was based at Bellahouston Camp, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland with a permanent address of 12 Gaffikin Street, Belfast.

Private Benson’s grave is in New Ground, Grave 325 of Drumcree Church of Ireland Churchyard, Portadown, Co. Armagh. In 2018, his name was a new addition to the Portadown War Memorial, Portadown, Co. Armagh.
