Trooper James Taylor Tweedie of Portadown, Co. Armagh died on 6th September 1944 while serving with the North Irish Horse, Royal Armoured Corps in Italy.

Trooper James Taylor Tweedie (7902799) served in North Irish Horse, Royal Armoured Corps during the Second World War. He was the son of Joseph Tweedie and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Jane Tweedie of 15 Quality Hill, Laurelvale, Co. Armagh, and the husband of Annie Tweedie (née Lyttle) of 10 Queen Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh.

Trooper Tweedie joined the army in December 1939 at Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone. He died on 6th September 1944 aged 37 years old. After his death, Tweedie’s wife received an airgraph from the Right Honourable Lord O’Neill of the North Irish Horse. He expressed his sympathy and said he was nearby when Trooper Tweedie died instantly. He added:

I remember well when Mr. Montgomery brought your husband along from Fivemiletown to join the regiment, Ever since, he has been a most loyal, painstaking, and hard-working member of the North Irish Horse. His death will be mourned by many in the regiment and since he was with me on many occasions when I commanded A Squadron, I feel his loss very much.

Trooper Tweedie’s grave is in Section I, Row B, Grave 27 of Gradara War Cemetery, Italy. His name is on the Portadown War Memorial, Portadown, Co. Armagh. His headstone bears the inscription:

Darling husband of Annie, Queen Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland. Mizpah.

On 2nd September 1955, a coach departed from London, bound on a tour of European war cemeteries. On board was Miss Wendy Tweedie, who was able to visit her father’s grave in Italy. Trooper James Taylor Tweedie was a brother-in-law of Corporal Albert Lyttle M.M.
