Carpenter James McNeilly Belshaw of Ballywalter, Co. Down was on board S.S. Kenbane Head when it came under attack from a German vessel on 5th November 1940.

Carpenter James McNeilly Belshaw served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Born on 10th September 1904 and known as Jim, he was the son of Petty Officer Coastguard the late James Belshaw and Jane Belshaw (née McNeilly). The family spent time living at the Coastguard Station in Dawros, Lackaduff, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Jim was the husband of Jane "Nettie" Belshaw (née Kerr) of 2 Dunleath Terrace, Ballywalter, Co. Down.
In civilian life, Jim worked as a carpenter before going to sea during the Second World War. Carpenter McNeilly died on 5th November 1940 aged 36 years old while serving on S.S. Kenbane Head. He has no known grave and his name is on Panel 60 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England, on a headstone of the Belshaw family plot at Whitechurch Cemetery, Ballywalter, Co. Down, on the memorial plaque of Ballywalter Presbyterian Church, Ballywalter, Co. Down, and on the Ballywalter War Memorial, Ballywalter, Co. Down.
