He was the husband of Elizabeth Benson of Belfast, Co. Antrim. James died of an undisclosed illness on Monday 25th September 1939 aged 53 years old.

James Benson’s grave is in Section Q, Grave 160 of Carnmoney Cemetery, Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:

In memory of our dear father died on active service and our mother Elizabeth who died 28th July 1940.
