Hugh Henry Millar

Corporal Hugh Henry Millar from Belfast, Co. Down died on 7th June 1944 as the Royal Ulster Rifles advanced through Normandy following the D-Day Landings.

Corporal Hugh Henry Millar (7014297) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He was the son of John Millar and Isabella Millar of 6 Abetta Parade, Belfast, Co. Down.

Brothers Robert Millar and Thomas Millar also served in the Royal Ulster Rifles. Robert was wounded during the Second World War. Hugh’s father John Millar served with the Royal Irish Rifles in World War One.

Hugh died on Wednesday 7th June 1944 aged 23 years old. Cause of death was a fatal gunshot to the head at “Wood Gazelle”, Cambes Wood, Normandy, France.

Hugh Henry Millar’s grave is in Section IX, Row D, Grave 8 of La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:

He died that many might live.
