George McCormick

Mate George McCormick served in the Merchant Navy during World War Two. He died on board the SS Castlehill, which was attacked in the Bristol Channel.

Mate George McCormick served in the Merchant Navy during World War Two. He was the son of George McCormick and Isabella McCormick of Killyleagh, Co. Down.

McCormick died on board the SS Castlehill on 2nd March 1941 aged 26 years old. Belfast shipyard Scott & Sons built the SS Castlehill in 1920. John Kelly Ltd. owned the vessel at the time of its sinking.

The Castlehill sank in the Bristol Channel off Minehead, Somerset. A Heinkel HE111 of Kampfgeschwader 27, Luftwaffe bombed the cargo ship. Only one crew member survived.

George McCormick’s name is on Panel 24 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
