3rd (Rumbeke) Infantry Brigade

3rd (Rumbeke) Infantry Brigade of the Belgian Army arrived in Northern Ireland in 1945. They trained in towns like Carrickfergus and Whitehead, Co. Antrim.

3rd (Rumbeke) Infantry Brigade of the Belgian Army arrived in Northern Ireland to begin training between 21st March 1945 and 29th March 1945. This brigade, raised on 12th March 1945, consisted of volunteers and conscripts already with service in the Second World War.

In Northern Ireland, Brigade Headquarters operated from Whiteabbey, Co. Antrim. Other Battalions were in Whitehead, Co. Antrim, Ballycarry, Co. Antrim, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim, Larne, Co. Antrim, and Cairndhu, Co. Antrim. Their commanding officer during this time was Colonel Van den Eijnde until 26th February 1946.

The brigade remained in Northern Ireland until the autumn of 1945. From 3rd September 1945, they left for Britain, where they trained until the end of September 1945. 3rd (Rumbeke) Infantry Brigade returned to operations on the coast of Belgium. From there, they went on to serve in occupied Germany.
