In 1941, the city of Belfast remained unprepared for the arrival of war to its doorstep. On 7th April 1941, the Luftwaffe arrived and everything changed.
During the Belfast Blitz in May 1941, Protestants from the Shankill Road joined their Catholic neighbours in the shelter of the crypt of Clonard Monastery.
Gunner Peter Jones of Glasgow, Scotland died on 8th April 1941. He served in 102nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Was he the gunner killed in the Blitz?
Civilian Sarah Hughes of 12 Thorndyke Street, Belfast died on 17th April 1941 at the Royal Victoria Hospital following the Luftwaffe's air raid on the city.
