WartimeNI in Southampton (2014)

The first stop on our D-Day 70 journey was Southampton where we landed following a flight from the former R.A.F. Sydenham, now George Best Belfast City Airport.

Hamtun Street and Holy Rood

Murals on Southampton's Hamtun Street commemorate the role played by the port city, while the ruins of Holy Rood Church mark events throughout the war.

The City Gates

Next to the old historic gates, stands a commemorative stone that marks the role played by Southampton and the surrounding area during the course of the Second World War.

Solent Sky Museum

The Solent Sky Museum in Southampton is home to the Supermarine Spitfire, a prototype of which first flew from the nearby airfield at Eastleigh in 1936.
