A Second World War type grenade causes an alert in Portadown, Co. Armagh

On 30th August 2022, a member of the public fishing on the River Bann in Portadown, Co. Armagh discovered what appeared to be an old Second World War grenade.

On 30th August 2022, a security alert unfolded at Bridge Street in the town of Portadown, Co. Armagh. A member of the public discovered what appeared to be a Second World War grenade while fishing nearby in the River Bann. Authorities put safety cordons into place and closed a number of roads in the town including the towpath.

Members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the British Army attended the scene. Ammunition Technical Officers declared the grenade a “viable device” and carried out a controlled explosion.
