ANZAC troops in Northern Ireland

ANZAC Day is commemorated on 25th April each year across the world including events at Ballance House in Glenavy. Many ANZAC troops served and died in NI.

ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand. The day commemorates all Australian and New Zealanders who served and died in wars and conflicts.

ANZAC Day taken place on 25th April each year. This day first marked the contributions of Australian and New Zealand forces’ sacrifices in Gallipolli during The Great War. This was the first campaign that lead to major casualties for ANZAC troops. The acronym stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

Observing ANZAC Day

Many nations across the world observe ANZAC Day commemorations. These include Australasian nations such as Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn Islands, and Tonga. Smaller services take place across the world. Since 2009, a Northern Irish event has taken place at The Ballance House, Glenavy, Co. Antrim.

Many ANZAC troops came to Northern Ireland for training and mobilisation. Some would not return home.

Frederick Hugh Anderson

Pilot Officer Frederick Hugh Anderson (404880) served as a pilot in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was the son of Hugh Alexander Anderson and Ruby Eleanor Anderson of Wangaehu, Wellington, New Zealand. Pilot Officer Anderson was with RAF 153 Squadron when he died aged 22 on 19th November 1941. His grave is in Grave 1, St. Andrew Church of Ireland, Ballyhalbert, Co. Down.

Ross Wellesley Lindeman

Sergeant Ross Wellesley Lindeman (493141) served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was the son of Frederick Harold Lindeman and Hilda Maud Lindeman of Edgecliff, New South Wales, Australia. Sergeant Lindeman was with RAF 153 Squadron when he died aged 21 on 25th January 1942. His grave is in St. Andrew Church of Ireland, Ballyhalbert, Co. Down.

Hugh Gavin Fraser

Pilot Officer Hugh Gavin Fraser (402051) served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was the son of Andrew Currie Fraser and Beatrice Irene Fraser of Camberwell, Victoria, Australia. Pilot Officer Fraser was with RAF 206 Squadron when he died aged 28 on 1st February 1942. His grave is in St. Catherine Church of Ireland, Killead, Co. Antrim.

Sergeant Archibald Dethridge Campbell (400858) served in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was the son of Archibald George Campbell and Amy Campbell, and husband of Mary Watt Campbell, of Kilsyth, Victoria, Australia. Sergeant Campbell was with RAF 206 Squadron when he died aged 33 on 1st February 1942. Hs grave is in St. Catherine Church of Ireland, Killead, Co. Antrim.

Falkner Cotton Young

Sergeant Falkner Cotton Young (404354) served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was the son of William Vivian Young and Grace May Young of Condamine, Queensland, Australia. Sergeant Young was with the RAF when he died aged 24 on 1st February 1942. His grave is in St. Catherine Church of Ireland, Killead, Co. Antrim.

William Russell Rattray

Pilot Officer William Russell Rattray (41938) served as a pilot in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was the son of George James Rattray and Helen Inglis Rattray of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. Pilot Officer Rattray was with RAF 231 Squadron when he died aged 22 on 11th March 1942. Lindsay Ross Williams

Flight Sergeant Lindsay Ross Williams (402429) served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force.
