On 1st January 1944, a U.S. Navy team took to the football field in Newry Co. Down to challenge their U.S. Army counterparts for the "Potato Bowl" trophy.
At 1400hrs on 1st January 1944, the United States Navy Galloping Gaels faced the United States Army Wolverines in Newry, Co. Down. For one day only, the football ground of Newry City (then Town) Atheltic Football Club became the "Lone Star Field" as both sides battled to win the Northern Ireland Football Championship.
Around 2,500 spectators watched the game as both sides shared the “Potato Bowl” trophy. The game somehow finished 0-0, a rarity in the sport of American Football.
